Nel mese di settembre si è svolta la prima fase della pre-validazione delle tecnologie nel sito pilota italiano, coinvolgendo direttamente i due siti sperimentali in Toscana ed in Puglia. L’obiettivo di questi test  era quello di testare l’affidabilità e l’usabilità delle tecnologie scelte dal sito pilota italiano (https://youtu.be/Z5xKZk4asV8) . In particolare, 27 persone (10 persone over 65, 10 caregiver informali e 7 caregiver informali) hanno preso parte in maniera attiva ai test delle tecnologie nei due siti sperimentali, quello pugluese e quello toscano.

I partecipanti si sono così resi protagonisti del processo di sviluppo dando la loro opinione sui servizi e sui prodotti che sono stati loro mostrati, mettendo in luce eventuali malfunzionamenti e suggerendo migliorie. Tali feedback sono stati raccolti mediante questionari standardizzati (System Usability Scale e After Scenario Questionnaire) ed interviste semi-strutturate. In questa prima fase, le tecnologie testate sono state: l’interfaccia per la visualizzazione dei dati dello scenario di monitoraggio sviluppata dal partner ASCORA; l’applicazione per le videochiamate e per la condivisione di foto ed eventi sviluppata dal partner SENTAB; il robot per la telepresenza Ohmi già utilizzato nel sito pilota Toscano durante l’esperienza del fast pilot. A parità di opinioni ricevute, la tecnologia che ha ricevuto il maggior numero di consensi favorevoli è il robot per telepresenza. OHMI è stato ben accolto e ritenuto usabile sia dagli anziani, sia dai caregiver – formali ed informali – arruolati nei test del pilota toscano. L’interfaccia per la visualizzazione dei dati dei sensori è stata ritenuta molto utile dai caregiver formali ed informali che hanno anche espresso la loro preferenza di visualizzazione grafica dei risultati tra diverse opzioni disponibili.

Diversamente, l’interfaccia è stata ritenuta troppo complessa e poco utile dagli anziani. La tecnologia SENTAB è stata testata su due diverse piattaforme nei due siti pilota: sulla TV per gli utenti toscani e sul tablet per gli utenti pugliesi. In entrambi i casi è stata sottolineata l’importanza di vedere “bene e grande” il volto delle persone durante la video chiamata, ma la tecnologia proposta è risultata essere troppo complessa per altre funzionalità. Tutti questi feedback raccolti – strutturati e non strutturati – saranno di aiuto per migliorare e customizzare i servizi del progetto Pharaon che saranno attivi sul territorio a partire da Marzo 2022. I risultati in entrambi i piloti hanno sottolineato la sempre più crescente necessità di ridurre il divario digitale ed andare verso l’alfabetizzazione digitale di tutte quelle categorie di persone ritenute fragili. Anche i caregiver informali si sono resi aperti e disponibili ad imparare ad utilizzare queste tecnologie perché le vedono di utilità nel processo di cura dell’anziano di cui si occupano.

In questi giorni i partner tecnologici sono a lavoro per il rilascio delle tecnologie da testare nella seconda fase della pre-validazione che comincerà nel mese di novembre e prevede i primi test degli scenari integrati nelle piattaforme nazionali del progetto Pharaon. Al termine di questa integrazione la tecnologia verrà installata a casa di 10 anziani (5 in Toscana e 5 in Puglia) al fine di poter ricevere feedback dopo un uso prolungato della tecnologia.

Pre-validation Phase 1 at Italian Pilot Site

The first phase of the pre-validation of the technologies took place in September involving the two experimental sites located in Tuscany and Apulia. The objective of these tests was to evaluate the reliability and usability of the technologies chosen by the Italian pilot site. In particular, 27 people (10 people over 65, 10 informal caregivers and 7 informal caregivers) have actively participated in the testing of technologies in the two experimental sites. Participants have thus become protagonists of the development process by giving their opinions on the services and products that have been shown to them, highlighting any malfunctions and suggesting improvements. Such feedbacks have been collected through standardized questionnaires (System Usability Scale and After Scenario Questionnaire) and semi-structured interviews.

In this first phase, the technologies tested were: the interface for the visualization of the monitoring scenario data developed by the partner ASCORA; the application for video calls and for the sharing of photos and events developed by the partner SENTAB; the telepresence robot Ohmi already used in the Tuscany pilot site during the fast pilot experience.

In terms of opinions received, the technology that has received the most favorable consensus is the telepresence robot. OHMI was well accepted and deemed usable by both the older adults and the caregivers – formal and informal – enrolled in the Tuscany pilot trials. The interface for visualizing sensor data was found to be very useful by formal and informal caregivers who also expressed their preference for graphical visualization of results among several available options. Otherwise, the interface was found to be too complex and not very useful by older adults. The SENTAB technology was tested on two different platforms in the two pilot sites: on TV for Tuscan users and on tablet for Apulian users. In both cases the importance of seeing people’s faces “well and big” during the video call was stressed, but the proposed technology was found to be too complex for other functionalities. All of this feedback – structured and unstructured – collected will help to improve and customize the Pharaon project services that will be active starting in March 2022.

The results in both pilots underscored the growing need to reduce the digital divide and move toward digital literacy for all those categories of people deemed frail. Informal caregivers were also open and willing to learn how to use these technologies because they see them as helpful in the process of caring for their belowed one. In these days the technology partners are working for the release of the technologies to be tested in the second phase of the pre-validation that will begin in November and includes the first test of the scenarios integrated in the national platforms of the Pharaon project. At the end of this integration, the technology will be installed in the homes of 10 elderly people (5 in Tuscany and 5 in Apulia) to receive feedback after prolonged use of the technology.
