Con settembre (2021) è iniziata la fase I della pre-validazione delle tecnologie utilizzate in Pharaon. I siti piloti hanno avviato il processo di reclutamento dei partecipanti per testare tecnologie e funzionalità standalone, con l’obiettivo di raccogliere feedback sull’usabilità, suggerimenti per miglioramenti e, eventualmente, malfunzionamenti delle soluzioni scelte. Nel sito pilota pugliese, le tecnologie Discovery, del partner Ascora e l’app del partner Sentab, sono state testate rispettivamente da 5 pazienti (anziani), 5 caregiver informali e 2 caregiver formali (professionisti sanitari

Il materiale di formazione digitale, come le presentazioni PowerPoint, è stato creato per ciascuna tecnologia a supporto dei partecipanti ai test nell’utilizzo della tecnologia.

La prevalidazione si è svolta in 3 sessioni distinte. La prima, durante la terza settimana di settembre 2021, nella struttura di cura e assistenza per anziani “Casa Padre Pio”, con tre anziani over70enni. A causa degli impedimenti fisici dei partecipanti l’età e le condizioni fisiche sono state cruciali durante il reclutamento. Gli anziani hanno riscontrato alcune difficoltà nella lettura dei contenuti sugli schermi digitali e nell’interazione con il touch screen del tablet. I reclutatori hanno mostrato entrambe le tecnologie attraverso un tablet, spiegando lentamente e con attenzione l’utilizzo di base della tecnologia. Durante la stessa sessione nella struttura di cura sono stati arruolati caregiver informali e formali. I caregiver hanno acquisito le informazioni rapidamente, indipendentemente dalle loro precedenti esperienze con dispositivi con smartphone, tablet o PC. I commenti sono stati positivi nei confronti della piattaforma Discovery. Hanno anche restituito feedback su possibili miglioramenti e suggerimenti sull’usabilità dell’interfaccia dell’app Sentab. La seconda sessione si è svolta nella quarta settimana di settembre 2021, nel reparto di Geriatria dell’Ospedale di Ricerca Fondazione IRCCS Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza. È stato reclutato un anziano ricoverato di età  over 70 enne. In questa sessione, l’età non è stata determinante durante il reclutamento. L’operatore ha mostrato entrambe le tecnologie sul tablet, spiegando attentamente gli obiettivi delle stesse. L’esito è stato positivo: nonostante alcuni impedimenti fisici il partecipante era interessato e motivato ad utilizzare entrambe le tecnologie ed a migliorare le proprie capacità digitali. Anche la terza seduta si è svolta nella quarta settimana di settembre 2021, nell’ambulatorio di Geriatria dell’Ospedale di ricerca Fondazione IRCCS Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza. A due pazienti esterni over 60enni è stato chiesto di partecipare allo studio. Qui l’età è stata cruciale grazie alle minori difficoltà dei partecipanti nella gestione delle tecnologie mostrate. Come nella prima e nella seconda sessione, il recruiter ha mostrato la tecnologia della piattaforma sul tablet, spiegandone gli obiettivi. Anche in questo caso l’esito è stato positivo: i partecipanti erano in grado di utilizzare le tecnologie ma non erano sicuri che le capacità dei loro pari sarebbero state adeguate.

Per ogni partecipante, il reclutatore ha raccolto il consenso informato allo studio e ha mostrato l’utilizzo della tecnologia con il supporto del materiale di formazione. Al termine di ogni sessione di test, lo sperimentatore ha somministrato l’After Scenario Questionnaire (ASQ) e la System Usability Scale (SUS), raccogliendo feedback sull’utilizzo delle tecnologie. I dati dei questionari sono stati analizzati da Autonomlab, responsabile delle attività di pre-validazione in Pharaon, per migliorare le proprietà tecniche dei dispositivi digitali sulla base dei commenti dei tester e per rivedere le attuali esigenze degli utenti.

Ora, i partner tecnici stanno mettendo a punto e migliorando le loro soluzioni tecnologiche, grazie ai commenti e ai questionari ottenuti nella fase I della prevalidazione. A novembre 2021 i piloti inizieranno la fase II della prevalidazione in cui i reclutatori consentiranno ai nuovi partecipanti di testare le tecnologie integrate nelle loro case per per più tempo. Feedback e commenti saranno raccolti anche attraverso i questionari standardizzati.

Training and prevalidation of technologies in the Apulian pilot site, phase I – EN

In September 2021, prevalidation of technologies in Pharaon started with phase I, as planned: pilot sites started recruiting participants to test standalone technologies and functionalities, aiming at gathering feedback on usability, suggestions for improvements and, possibly, malfunctioning of the chosen technologies. In the Apulian pilot site, the technologies Discovery, from partner Ascora, and the Sentab app, from partner Sentab, were tested by 5 patients (older adults), 5 informal caregivers and 2 formal caregivers (health professionals).

Digital training material, like PowerPoint presentations, was created for each technology to instruct participants in using the technology during the recruitment sessions.

Phase I of the prevalidation in the Apulian Italian pilot took place in 3 distinct sessions.

The first session took place during the third week of September 2021, in the care facility for older adults “Casa Padre Pio”,  where three older adults aged >70 years were recruited. Age and physical conditions were crucial during the recruitment, due to the physical impediments of the participants. Older adults found some difficulties in reading content on digital screens and in interacting with the tablet touch screen.

The recruiters showed both technologies through a tablet, slowly and carefully explaining the basic usage of the technology, considering the psycho-physiological difficulties of older adults. Informal and formal caregivers were enrolled during the same session in the care facility. The caregivers acquired the information rapidly, regardless of their previous experiences with devices with smartphones, tablets or PCs. Comments were positive towards the Discovery platform. They also returned feedback on possible improvements and suggestions on the usability of the Sentab app interface for older adults.

The second session took place in the fourth week of September 2021, in the care facilities of the Research Hospital Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza. One hospitalized older adult aged >70 years was recruited: in this session, age wasn’t crucial during the recruitment. The training operator showed both technologies on the tablet, carefully explaining the aims of the technologies. The outcome was more positive in this case: the participant was interested and motivated in using both technologies and improving his/her own digital abilities, despite some physical impediments.

The third session also took place in the fourth week of September 2021, in the outpatient room of the geriatric clinic of the Research Hospital Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza. Two out-patients aged >60 years were asked to participate in the study. In this session, age was crucial thanks to fewer difficulties of the participants in managing the shown technologies. As in the first and second sessions, the recruiter showed the platform technology on the tablet, explaining the aims of the technologies. The outcome was more positive in this case too: the participants were capable of using technologies but felt not confident in the capability of their peers.

For every participant, the recruiter gathered informed consent and showed technology usage with the support of the training material. At the end of each test session, the experimenter administered the After Scenario Questionnaire (ASQ) and System Usability Scale (SUS), collecting feedback on the utilization of the technologies. Data from questionnaires has been analyzed by Autonomlab, responsible for the pre-validation activities in Pharaon, to ameliorate the technical properties of the digital devices based on the testers’ comments and to revise the current users’ requirements.

Now, technical partners are debugging and improving their technological solutions, thanks to the comments and questionnaires retrieved in the phase I of the prevalidation. In November 2021, pilots will start phase II of the prevalidation where recruiters will let new participants test the integrated technologies in their homes for a longer time. Feedback and comments will also be gathered through the standardized questionnaires.
